Chris Norman

Grace Sight #28 is Chris Norman.

Chris Norman is from Detroit, Michigan. He was a Defensive Linebacker for the Michigan State University Spartans Football team from 2009-2012.  Chris Norman is a Grace Sight because his faith commitment to Christ was so genuine that after college he gave up a promising career in the NFL to enter Seminary to prepare for the ministry.

Chris Norman was a 4 year letterman in Michigan State Football. He was injured in the 2011 Capital One Bowl against Alabama and the injury led him to reexamine his spiritual life. On May 24, 2011, Chris Norman gave his life over to Jesus Christ (Source). In this a video of Chris Norman's testimony made by Desiring God, Chris Norman reveals how God has provided for his needs after he made the decision to go to seminary instead of the NFL.

Drafted: Why Chris Norman Said No to the NFL from Desiring God on Vimeo.

Chris Norman has interwoven Matthew 13:44 into his testimony when speaking about his faith :
In the Gospel there's a story about somebody that stumbles across a field and then they found a treasure hidden in that field. As a result of finding that treasure, they sold everything they had so they can buy that field. That's pretty much what happened to me when I found Christ. So once I met him and fell absolutely in love with him, everything else was not as attractive in comparison (Source).
As a Christian, I look forward to hearing what Chris Norman does in his ministry in the future. His ministry will be much more important than any play he could have made on the football field.

Tim Tebow

Grace Sight #23 is Tim Tebow.

Tim Tebow is an NFL quarterback with the New England Patriots. Tim Tebow had tremendous success in college football for the University of Florida before being the Number 1 draft pick for the Denver Broncos in 2010. Tim Tebow is a Grace Light because of how he shares his Christian faith and dedicates time and personal resources to helping orphans, prisoners and other needy people in the name of Christ.

College Career:  Tim Tebow played four years for the University of Florida. Florida won the national championship in 2006 and 2008 thanks to his leadership.  In 2007, Tim Tebow became the first college Sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy.

NFL Career: Tim Tebow was drafted Number 1 by the Denver Broncos in 2010. In the 2011 NFL Playoffs he led the Denver Broncos to a thrilling overtime win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in their first game of the NFL playoffs. In March, 2012 Tim Tebow was traded by the Denver Broncos to the New York Jets (Source).

Most recently he spoke on April 9, 2012 to 20,000 people at a mega Easter Service in Georgetown, Texas with Pastor Joe Champion of the Celebration Church (Source). In his message Tim Tebow said, "When you have a relationship with Christ and you know He has a plan for your life it gives you peace in everything (Source)."

Expressions of Faith on the Field: There have been specific ways in which Tim Tebow has shared his faith on the field through his sports career.  Here are two of them.
  1. Eye Black. Tebow frequently put Bible Verses in his eye black he wore at games. A complete list of the verses he wore at specific games in college can be found at  http://timtebowquotes.com/tim-tebow-christian.htm.
  2. Tebowing. Tim Tebow's practice of praying in the middle of sporting events created a term Tebowing that refers to someone praying on their hands and knees even though others are doing something diferent. It has it's own website at http://tebowing.com.
Tim Tebow Foundation: Tim Tebow gives to others off the field through the Tim Tebow Foundation.  According to the Tim Tebow Foundation website there are four areas of outreach of the foundation.

The advertisement can be seen in the YouTube video at http://youtu.be/sw7qX1TpdNQ. The story behind the advertisement is that Tim Tebow's mother Pam Tebow was advised to have an abortion because of complications with the pregnancy, but her beliefs would not allow her to get an abortion. And when Tim Tebow was born he was hanging on by the tiniest of placentas (Source).

Author: Tim Tebow wrote the book Through My Eyes that was published on May 31, 2011. The book is his life memoir up until the date it was written.

Kirk Cousins

Grace Sight #17 is Kirk Cousins.

Kirk Cousins was the starting quarterback for the Michigan State Spartans. In April, 2012 he was drafted in the fourth round of the NFL by the Washington Redskins. Kirk Cousins is a Grace Sight because he is both a star athlete and someone that shares the testimony of his faith as opportunity allows.

He holds two pretty amazing records from his four years at Michigan State University.
  • He has the most wins of any starting quarterback in Michigan State History. He broke the record in a stellar performance in a win over #4 Wisconsin on October 22, 2011 (Source).
  • He is the first Michigan State quarterback to beat the University of Michigan Wolverines 3 straight times (Source).
In September, 2009 following Michigan State's loss to Notre Dame, an article on MLive was written about the faith of Kirk Cousins, the sophomore quarterback for Michigan State University.  Following the loss Kirk Cousins told reporters the following quote:
I've got a faith. Football's not my foundation, it's not my identity. My faith is Jesus Christ and He's not changing anytime soon. I'll keep trusting in Him and in His plan and just move on (Source).
Fast forward two years and here is a video of Kirk Cousins' speech representing the players at the Big Ten Kickoff for 2011.  After the 5:00 minute mark he talks about his spiritual philosophy. In this talk he quotes from the Bible.
From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked (Luke 12:48b).

Testimonies like Kirk Cousins has can be rare to find in the world of sports. But they can be even rarer to keep.  Therefore, it is reassuring that the God who saved Kirk has the power and will to protect him as he faces the various temptations that come with being a superstar. May he continue to be a role model for others wherever his future leads him.

You can find out more about Kirk Cousins on his Wikipedia page.
